bunnies :(

it's not fair! how come they get to keep their kids @home and i can't keep my bunnies? bunnies are infinitely gentler, cuter, less troublesome, and more loveable than spoiled brats. and i've wanted bunnies for as long as i can remember! i finally get a pair, research on the things i need to do, buy the most suitable cage i could find, and daydream about the time when the bunnies finally come to take abode in my room. only to end up with the bunnies elsewhere, a place im not even sure they'll be taken care of, all because of some silly superstitions. ever since my sisters started leaving this house, i've been living alone. my room has been my home, and the rest of the house simply hallways and kitchens and bathrooms. and now, after over a year, i want a pet to keep me company. a bunny, no less. ive been fantasizing about it nonstop for the past 72 hours, only to be forced to leave them elsewhere. and when i go to visit, they have to make me go home because i have to study. if i were to die tomorrow id be much happier if id spent today caring for bunnies than studying... i mean, really, there are other more important things than scholastic achievements, too. in fact, right now i feel really tired of grades, of school stuff. they don't make sense when you can't even control your own life, can't even dictate your own actions, and can't live for the things you want. they don't make sense when you're constantly living for other people. they stayed away long enough for me to form my own character, likes, and dislikes, and i don't think they have the right to force their priorities on me. i want a bunny, because i want to be loved by and to love somebody who doesn't love me for my intellect or achievements or whatever. i want somebody whom i can really talk to, anytime. somebody who will be there, somebody i can cuddle when i need to. of course, i have my best friend to do all that, but he can't always be at my place. he has his own life, and i have no plans of changing it to suit my needs and wants. but a bunny... ill make them really happy, and they'll make me really happy, too. ill buy them toys and treats. i even memorized the whole diet plan for my bunnies for the next year or so. i already know what to buy and when to give them. i really want those bunnies, and i want them badly. i wanna make sure they're warm and comfortable, that they're well-fed and rehydrated always. i wanna make sure that they're happy. and i want them to be there for me, too. i want them to help me destress after a day's work. i want them to help me cope with school pressures and requirements and thesis and all that. i want them badly... and i want them here with me now. 10years is a long time to wait to finally get bunnies for which i've fully prepared myself. it was a task which i was seriously going to take on, not unlike baking or working on a project. and it hurts when your batter gets spilled by some rowdy kid right after you've mixed it to perfection. it hurts when your pc crashes and you lose all the work you've done on a project. it hurts to prepare and yearn for bunnies, only to realize in the end that you won't have the liberty of keeping them. sometimes i wish i were stronger. strong enough to leave home and face all its consequences. strong enough to assert and fight for what i want. from a course in college to the little things that matter most. but im only strong for as long as i don't risk anything serious. and sometimes i wish i were stronger...

Fridge Problem

*sigh* ok, im stressed… things haven’t been too easy the past few days. And now the fridge is down, so I can’t bake the cakes im supposed to be baking now. The butter I’m supposed to be using is melting, and that’s not exactly good for cakes. And there are all these other things that need to be done, things to be taken care of. If I don’t bake the cakes now I wont be able to give one to my high school teacher on time coz I doubt id have time tomorrow morning. I don’t even have the cake boxes yet. I did find a shop near here just last night that sells cake boxes, but they sell by the hundreds. Assuming I heard correctly, though, they sell them at a price that’s way way way cheaper than those of other baking supply stores. Hmm... Im supposed to be on my way to school now to man the booth, but im just not in the mood to sit there and idle my time away. We have a mobile game to finish by feb20+ which we haven’t started on, machine projects for school, more machine projects, oral reports, written reports, presentations, researches, and I wasn’t even able to attend the prayer meeting last Tuesday. Plus I don’t have a company yet for my ojt this summer. So many problems, so little time to fix them. Baking has become a pleasant escape, an outlet for my stress, something I can actually do even when I’m not feeling at my best, but circumstances prevent me from doing even that. What a nice day for the fridge to break down. It has been with us for more than ten years now. Why not break down two days ago? Maybe if that happened it would be okay now, or there’d be a new fridge by now so I can go on with my plans and finish my cakes. Of course, I can make the cakes now and not chill it, but I’ll have twelve egg yolks left over, and I’d planned on making a leche flan out of them. I can’t very well keep leche flan from spoiling without a fridge, can i? Or egg yolks, either. And even if I could, it’d be too late for me to figure that out now. My classes begin at 1300, and I need to be in school before twelve to have my annual physical exam, get my preactivity documents from cso, get my letter of approved absence from the student affairs office (which, by the way, has been there for the past three days. I hope it hasn’t been thrown away yet). I have an exam tomorrow night, and lots of exams for next week to top it all off. Plus we’re supposed to show our adviser something for our mobile game later today, and we have barely made progress. *sigh* I just want a fridge right now. That’s all. That’s enough to make me happy, forget all my problems momentarily, and give me time to rethink my priorities. I can’t even be a good friend coz I have problems on my own. It makes it difficult to think and decide on other people’s behalf. And that just makes me feel so bad sometimes. Knowing you’re not helping a friend… especially if that friend is your best friend, and he’s making a decision that’s really important to him. I feel so worthless right now. Well, I guess that’s it for now. If you’re still with me up to this point, thank you very much for reading. I guess I just needed an outlet for my frustrations.

*yawn* im sleepy. :-) hehe, but i really have to finish some forms tonight. and i gotta get started on either anmath2 or rels2. :-) hehe, cant afford having a backlog of school and extracurricular work building up again. lolz!

anywayz, i had fun with the frosh today, haha. :-) i went to miss nats's compro1 lab class as a peer tutor, see. its really fun to mke new friends, haha. :-) hmm, cept that i felt they weren't really that interested and all. oh well, hehe, c miss nats nman prof nila, eh. :-) they're in good hands.

the frosh acquaintance party was postponed to june 18, btw. :-) hmm, and i cant attend anymore, huhuhu. hehe, have ACM training from 10am onwards, c. :-) and even if i didnt, i still have the CLiP to worry about. its from 10am - 5pm. :-) 2 bad... pizza hut pa nman ata food sponsor nila, haha. oh boy, im hungry again. and thirsty, hehe. :-) wish there were some C2 bottles in the fridge right now. lolz!

hmm... i missed college fellowship again tonight... :-) oh well, i guess i dnt regret it, though. i daresay it served a purpose somehow. :-) hmm... talked to a friend. and you know what, i found myself questioning my own faith. hehe! :-) looks like i still have a lot to learn and a long way to go in attaining spiritual maturity. its very difficult to keep intellectual reasoning and thoughts from interfering with what faith and religion advocates. :-) and i just wonder, as my friend does, what happens to nonbelievers. :-) i mean, what if they just never had the chance to know God? :-) what if no one introduced Him to them at all? ive heard people tell me how lucky i am that i was introduced to Him in my lifetime. :-) but what about those who didnt and will never have that chance? quoting someone from a story (im not sure if its fictional or not), "what kind of God is it who condemns nonbelievers to hell for all eternity?" :-) and as much as I love and trust God, its very difficult keep from doubting when i hear these things. :-) and i want to know. i want to know the truth about God, about the world, about the true essence of life in this world. :-) *sigh* i just talked with cathy jie about this yesterday, actually. she tells me that one can find out. one can find out even in this life. :-) and i want to find out. i daresay I've experienced Him and His works personally. ive kept records of things He has done that initially didnt make sense but that fit perfectly well with the other pieces of my life later on. :-) but somehow my faith is not absolute. i have doubts... and i want to be sure about what i believe in. :-) i want to have the wisdom and conviction to properly witness without being close-minded or too fundamental yet certain enough to keep my stand all throughout. :-) am i still making sense? :-) haha, anywayz... oh well. things'll fall into place.

well, yesterday's fellowship was memorable. :-) hehe, the speaker was absolutely great, c. at one point in his lecture i even cried. :-) his love story is quite touching, and its one of the best real-life examples ive encountered of how true love can wait. :-) hehe, he didnt look at another girl (at least that's what he claims, haha, joke) during his college years because he was waiting for his high school sweetheart. :-) he even intentionally passed by UST (where the girl was studying) on most days just for the chance to actually see her there and be able to drive her home. :-) anywayz, we also signed a pledge card. :-) hehe, sort of a marriage accountability thing. basically it just says that the holder should remain abstinent until he/she gets married. :-) btw, the name of the pastor who gave the talk is mr. paul calamiong. :-) a really great speaker, i must say.

church today wasnt bad either. :-) i wasnt late, hehe. and for the first time in sunday worship service i remembered to bring my Bible. :-) hehe, it was really fortunate, too, coz the passage for the sermon wasnt in the program sheet. :-) at least i dnt think it was.

anywayz, there's this guy in guilty gear i cant beat, huhu. :-) hehe, forgot his name... i really should learn the super thing that david does so well, though, haha. :-) itd probably be so much easier to defeat the enemies if i can do that. :-) btw, guilty gear is an arcade game. for boys, hehe. but im starting to enjoy it as well, coz there's this cute anime guy there, haha. :-) and coz ive learned its a really convenient way to release frustration. hehe, plus its a pretty enjoyable way to pass the time when im waiting for my turn in dmx. :-) haha.

US embassy

i went to the US embassy yesterday for a cocktail reception, and ooh, i loved the food, loved the place, and absolutely loved the people! :-) hehe, im really happy to have gotten to know those people. lovely... and the taco thingies were irresistible! :-) haha, near the end of the reception i was already standing by that end of the table, eating the tacos on my plate, and then reaching out for another as soon as i finish. :-)

anywayz, i do hope the dswd thingie on monday goes quickly and smoothly. :-) i really want to be able to attend my classes, c. :-) hehe, its the first day of school, after all. and ive been waiting for school to begin for quite some time now. :-)

i went to sm manila earlier, presumably to watch star wars. :-) hehe, unfortunately, by the time we got there, we didnt have time to have a snack before the first showing of the day began. :-) hehe, and david didnt want to miss breakfast, didnt want to enter the movie house in the middle of the movie, and didnt want to wait for the second showing because he wanted to come home early. :-) oh well... hehe, maybe next tym then. i played dmx, though. :-) and i still cannot finish afronova wild without failing, huhuhu. hehe, the ddr already costs two tokens, btw. :-) but fortunately dmx still costs one. :-)

whew, something really has to be done with the weather... :-)

anywayz, i helped the WG booth during the lpep earlier. :-) hehe, i never realized just standing there and giving away freebies could be so tiring. :-) but it was fun, too. especially whenever i came across someone i know from high school or wherever. :-) hehe, tomorrow ill be at the LSCS booth. i still havent decided what time ill be there, though. hehe, i kinda want to help out in the registration thingie, but it starts at 630. :-) hehe, and im nt even sure im allowed to join in. :-) my ID was working properly earlier when i came in, but according to them it wasnt supposed to. hehe! the summer pass was deactivated or samthing, i think. :-) hehe, at least that's how i understood it. and the entry permit works only from 8am to 11am. :-) oh wel. guess itll just depend on what time i wake up. hehe! :-)

less than a week to go before classes begin... :-) hehe, and i dont even have my complete sked with me right now. :-) i submitted my eaf to the SFA, c. unfortunately i missed out one or two courses when i was listing down my courses and their respective time slots. :-) hehe, now i dont even know what day of the week my AILPROJ falls under. :-) oh wel, i just hope im able to get my eaf on the first day of school. hehe, cant wait to bond with my blockmates again!. ;p hehe, i just realized i really missed them. :-) *naks!*

hmm, the weather is still so unbearably hot. :) oh wel, at least it effectively suppresses my shopaholic drives. :) hehe!

funny, i actually want to play pokemon right now. :) haha, just so bored... and KoL is starting to become less and less interesting. :) hehe, bagal na maglevel up, eh. so its the same advs over and over again. :) i still spend most of my internet time playing it, though. :)

CCS Student Nook

i went to DLSU earlier for the LSCS EB meeting. :) hehe, we ended in less than an hour, though. :) so i felt as if sayang ung pagpunta ko kung aalis na ko agad. haha. instead i decided to "clean up" the storage room of the nook. :) wow, it was life-changing! haha, i realized hw clean and orderly and tidy my room was. :) grabe, we found everything from mugs to shirts to combs to personal diaries to christmas trees! :) hehe, and i wasnt even able to dig halfway through. :) i got scared and worried that there might be bugs and roaches further on, c. :) hehe! and nobody wanted to pick up from there either. it wasnt all for naught, though. :) we were able to throw away lots of stuff and also found many things that we could still use. :) hehe, i do hope we are given a new office for the next school year. :) the nook is one big mess! then again, it should be very interesting to actually clean the whole storage room up. :) hehe, one never knows what the next box contains, c. :) maybe someday when the weather isnt quite as hot, ill ask some people to help me go through all the stuff in there. :) hehe, eliska and company also did a marvelously great job of cleaning up the chest and the drawers. :) and they were actually able to clean all the way to the bottom! hehe, or maybe we could continue the cleaning as a teambuilding activity. ;)

so there. :) still have to go to the college fellowship later on.

anywayz, i also went to jesi mendez tutuban to get a blowdry (coz my mom was insisting on it). :) i totally regretted it, though. i went out of the salon looking as if nothing happened at all! :) plus the guy who, uh, blowdried my hair was pulling on it so hard i wanted to ask him to back off! :) grabe, i was afraid my hair would fall off.. :) and they had the chutzpah to actually charge me for it! rather expensively, if i may add. :) with that money, i could have gone to david's salon sm manila and gotten a haircut from one of the best, uh, barbers they have there. :) or i could have gorged on some nice food. :) oh well... hehe, i was so upset and enraged that i couldn't resist playing for a while in the arcade. :) kailngan ko parin c david para sumalo, thou. :) haha. otherwise maaga natatapos ung game.

i made an achievement today! :) haha, i was able to use a kitchen knife without flinching! :) well.. fine, maybe a little bit... but on the whole, i wasnt too scared of it anymore. :) haha. for those who don't know, im afraid of sharp objects. hehe, and i generally avoid the kitchen at all costs. :) earlier some high school friends came over to borrow the kitchen, though. :) hehe, they wanted to prepare a little surprise for another friend, alvin. :) its his birthday today, c. and well, since i wasnt doing anything worthwhile at the time anywayz, i decided to, uh, help out. :) hehe, we cooked spaghetti. :) take note, that's a "we". haha, lolz! i guess i ended up, uh, "overcooking" the sauce and giving it that sumptuous, one-of-a-kind roasted flavor, but it wasn't solely MY fault! :) hehe! seriously now, though, if ur reading this, alvin, im, uh, sorry bout ur spaghetti... :) hehe, maybe next time ill just prepare fruit salad or samthing for you. :) samthing safer. hehe, and samthing that doesnt have to do with a knife. :) or a stove.

speaking of the Lucent GSSP, may i request the following people to get their letters from miss tabalba asap? :) the external linkages office is in the yuchengco building. :) 3d floor. i forgot the exact room number, but i think its 309. hehe, its not too difficult to find anywayz. :)

grrr.. the weather is almost unbearable! :) hehe, its sooo hot... oh wel..

hm, i finally hav a phone again, btw. :)

anywayz, i do hope i gather enuf people to help me with gutspill. :) ts the newsletter of the dlsu writers guild. :) i plan to make it a lil different this year, c. so i need people for the news section, the features section, the english literary section, the filipino literary section, and the chinese literary section. :) i also need people to help me with the layout and the graphics. :)

as for LSCS, the new course outline is really troublesome... :) hehe, and miss nats hasnt replied to my queries yet. :) oh well, i really hope im able to pull off lots of xciting and helpful activities for the next school year. :) at the moment it would seem my problem is the carrying out of the improvements on the Pabenta Libro. :) after that i still have to familiarize myself with the new course outlines and topics so i can come up with tutorials and reviewers better tailored to the students' curricula. :) and then there's the prob with the upperclassmen. :) i was just informed that our vice dean has some reservations about offering tutorials and reviewers to the upperclassmen. :) if only there were some way to make sure and prove that they will be beneficial. :) i suppose she has her reasons, though. and ill just have to take those into consideration, too. :)

oh well. :)

guess ill just have to leave it all up to God once again. :) may i be of service to Him through the jobs ive taken on for the next school year. :)

hehe, just want to tell everybody that im kinda stressed this week. (^_^) sorry na lang sa mga natarayan and matatarayan ko if ever. (^_^) lolz!

grabe, i dont know how im going to be able to live through next week. (^_^) hehe, there's the cisco final exam on monday, which i havent started preparing for, and probably wont have time to. (^_^) tuesday is the deadline of my chemone problem set and engltwo first draft, plus i have a chemone quiz scheduled for that same day. (^_^) on wednesday, i need to submit my prelab stuff for chemlab, and, of course, the famed archon. (^_^) on thursday, i have a test in anmath1. (^_^) and finally, friday is the deadline of my dasalgo mp.

the mps are drivingme crazy. (^_^) hehe, esp archon. i guess graphical user interfaces aren't for me. for some reason my GUIs just wont function the way i want them to! (^_^) hehe, once i finish the machine projects, i think ill start making some of my own games, haha. (^_^) i want to make my version of monopoly... and maybe game of the generals so i can play against my pc... (^_^) haha, that is, if im not yet too demoralized after the mp deadlines. (^_^)

PITTSBURGH - He could be older than Warner Bros. studio, General Motors, the Boy Scouts and the states of Arizona and New Mexico. He could have survived two world wars and Prohibition. He could have been dinner.

He's Bubba, a 22-pound leviathan of a lobster pulled from the waters off Nantucket, Mass., and shipped to a Pittsburgh fish market. The lobster has been kept in a tank near a fish counter in Wholey's Market since Thursday while owner Bob Wholey tried to figure out what to do with it.

"It is overwhelming," Wholey said. "If you see it, you will never forget it. Customers are just in awe."

On Tuesday, Wholey gave the lobster to the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium, which will send him to an aquarium at a Ripley's Believe It or Not museum.

Based on how long it typically takes a lobster to reach eating size — about five to seven years to grow to a pound — some estimate Bubba is 100 years old.

That would make the crustacean older than Warner Bros. (1907), the Boy Scouts (1910) and the states of Arizona and New Mexico (1912), not to mention the first commercial radio station (1920), television (1927) and computers (1943).

Bob Bayer, executive director of the University of Maine's Lobster Institute, is skeptical and estimates that Bubba is likely 50 years old, but doesn't know for sure. Warm water and plenty of food may have more to do with a lobster's size than how long it's been alive.

"We have looked at all kinds of things to figure out if there is any way to age a lobster. I'm guessing 100 years is probably too high but I can't argue with it because you don't know," Bayer said.

No matter his age, Bubba dwarfs a typical 1 1/2-pound lobster. He's about three feet long and took up about half a 4-foot-by-4-foot tank at Wholey's Market. A lobster sharing his tank was about as big as one of Bubba's claws.

A handful of people who wandered by the tank Tuesday were impressed. One woman quietly said, "Wow," while a man said, "He's serious."

Although his business is to sell seafood, Wholey says Bubba was never bound to be boiled and buttered. And he's become a little philosophical after seeing the lobster, which could be twice his 54 years.

"I don't think you could eat something that big. ... What range of emotions does a lobster have? Greed? Lust? Love? I'm just going to give him to the zoo and hope he lives another 100 years," Wholey said.

"If you sat down and ate this thing, wouldn't that be a bit shellfish?"

hehe, made some new friends today at church, (^_^) yey! lolz! hehe, i woke up rather late, c. and the second service closes its doors at 845. (^_^) so i figured id attend the 3d service instead. anywayz, it was only about 930 when i arrived, so i decided to look around and try to strike up a conversation with whoever seems most apporachable. (^_^) hehe, i never imagined the wife of a reverend would be the first friend id make today, though. (^_^) haha. really lucky, actually. she knws so many people in UECP that before the second service ended i couldn't keep track of the names of people she had introduced anymore. (^_^) hehe, so there.

anywayz, i played dance maniax yesterday! (^_^) haha, im really addicted already. and david is great! suddenly i felt inferior, haha. (^_^) for someone who doesnt really play dance maniax dat often he dances really well. hehe! ang saya tlg magdance maniax. hehe, a nyc way to destress. (^_^)

btw, to the ccs students and faculty out there, please join the CCS bowl off! (^_^) hehe, its time to unwind. forget the MPs...(^_^) cant do much if ur stressed, anywayz. hehe!

so where shall i start? (^_^) haha, i havent blogged for so long, i dont know what to talk about first.

gosh, im so beat. (^_^) hehe, really really tired. so tired, in fact, that i was too lazy to finish my dinner. anywayz, i had a very exhausting yet fulfilling day. (^_^) the kids are just so lovable and cute! im definitely going to miss them. (^_^) grabe, its really embarrassing, haha. i practically sobbed uncontrollably in front of a bunch of kids and some grownups. (^_^) hehe, its the last day of the implementation of our nstp-c2 project, c. so its not very likely that ill be meeting those kids again. (^_^) anywayz, most of them are really sweet. i got everything from letters to drawings to artwork and even a hair ornament as gifts and mementos. (^_^) my personal favorite is heidi and her little brother. (^_^) althou at the end of the day i couldnt quite make up my mind which kid to hug first anymore. hehe, dexter, heidi's brother, and another little boy practcally clung to me the whole time. (^_^) the mom of the other little boy (sorry, i think i missed his name *sheepishly*) told me that the boy kept asking for her permission to let him leave with me, actually. (^_^) hehe, he's really so loving. and then there was this other girl who kept telling me to stop crying. (^_^) and gosh, the list goes on. kids are just great! hehe, next time i deal with so many kids, however, i think ill bring along a nice bottle of energy drink. (^_^) hehe, i was really really exhausted by the time we finished that i walked part of the gox lobby with my eyes closed. (^_^) hehe, figured the benches arent too hard if ever i bump into them, anywayz. (^_^) haha. so there. grabe, ang saya tlaga. hehe, i cant wait for the pix to be uploaded. as most, if not all, of S11 ppol knw, yesterday was maus's bday! (^_^) hehe, grabe, adventure din kahapon. ill start with feb10. (^_^) feb10 was my fave high school teacher's bday, c. i cudnt greet her personally bcoz my sked is packed on thursdays, so i just texted her before my first class began. (^_^) i had also scheduled an ecard to be sent to her about a week before. (^_^) near the end of the day, she texted me and thanked me for the ecard. (^_^) however, she also told me how sad her day was. unfortunately, the juniors and seniors missed her bday. the juniors hadnt greeted her until she told them to! the seniors forgot as well, but they gave her a cake at the last minute. i guess i daresay ive known her personally, so i knew she was really hurt. (^_^) i asked david if he was free the next day so that we cud see my teacher and give her a little gift from both of us. (^_^) he decided to cut his classes the next day, though, and went to SM manila instead for the "first part of my valentines gift." (^_^) since maus had a lab sched at 230 and her last class before that ended at 1240, i figured we wouldn't stay in gox too long. (^_^) not taking into account yet the fact that i had to go back to dlsu after going bowling to shop for some of david's gifts at the bazaar, i told him we'd be done bowling at 2pm. (^_^) however, my other blockmates took some time in eating and having their achiever scholar pix taken that by the time we were ready to leave, maus's lab was about to begin. (^_^) she said she didnt want to resched, so everyone else cept me (i think) decided to go to bowling inn and just hope that maus will get back in time to join them before everyone heads home. (^_^) i decided since the brithday celebrant wasnt there, anywayz, and since david has been waiting for some time already, (fine, plus the fact that i wanted to play dance maniax), ill just get his gifts already and head straight to SM. (^_^) nathz texted me, however, and told me that maus was in bowling inn already! (^_^) *who could resist bowling esp when the other option is attending a physics lab???* so i started hurrying again. (^_^) hehe, the cello's dounts had to wait, however, coz the guy who was manning the booth said the ppol who bought the donuts are still on their way back and shud return by 1530 or 1600. (^_^) so i hastened to bowling inn, waited for their game to finish, played in the next, and headed back to dlsu. (^_^) i claimed the donuts, hurried to SM manila, and started thinking of how i cud possibly explain the fact that i was 3hours late at my meeting with david and more than an hour late at our meeting with our teacher (who had attended a conference and was set to come back to uno at about 1730). (^_^) hehe, david turned out to be quite understanding, though. (^_^) hehe, so i didnt have too much of a problem with that. anywayz, i did get a litle hurt when he wudnt let me play dance maniax even once, so mjo nagtampo pa ko. *hihi* (^_^) but then when he went to get the "first part of my valentines gift," cympre happy na lit ako. (^_^) haha, he gave me a dozen roses with a cute little bear on the side and a heart-shaped balloon, c. (^_^) hehe, had trouble carrying it home actually. ;p haha, but i totally love it. (^_^) ang sweet and romantic, eh... *swoon* ;p *mmm, wag lalaki ulo...;p*

hmm... there are still many other things i wanna talk about, but im really tired. (^_^) hehe! 2loy ko na lng. sorry if there are any grammatical and typo errors in my blog entry. (^_^) hehe, can hardly keep my eyes open already, c. (^_^)

anywayz, i headed to sm manila just the same, haha. (^_^) cudnt resist playing a game or two of dance maniax, c. (^_^) i only played three games. hehe, i pressed the wrong buttons for the first one, though. so i had to choose among the lists of preset songs. (^_^) hehe, and then i chose the slower wild songs for the second token, and opted for the four circle thingie for the third token. (^_^) haha, nagfail ako sa third song dun sa four circles. playing dance maniax alone is nowhere as much fun as when you're surrounded by friends, thou. (^_^) hehe, and its really embarrassing to "fail" when there are no people to laugh with you. (^_^) oh wel. hehe, anywayz, i also headed to blue magic because i was looking for a particular card. (^_^) i eventually found it, but in the end i opted against the huge card in favor of a really cute heart-shaped pillow. (^_^) hehe!

Jan. 21, 2005 — The hidden room where Leonardo da Vinci might have begun painting the Mona Lisa has been discovered in an old friary in the heart of Florence, a team of researchers from Italy's Military Geographical Institute announced at a press conference this week.

Hidden in a part of a building that once belonged to the friary of the Santissima Annunziata and was later taken over by the Military Geographical Institute, the workshop contains frescoes containing "impressive associations" with other examples of Leonardo's work, according to Alessandro del Meglio, Roberto Manescalchi and Maria Carchio, the researchers who made the discovery.

French officials are close to giving Oscar-winning filmmaker Ron Howard the final go-ahead to shoot scenes of his big-screen adaptation of author Dan Brown's best-selling thriller The Da Vinci Code in the famed museum, according to published reports.

"There is really a very strong desire to see the movie for this book, which has world renown, shot in the Louvre," the Louvre's director, Henri Loyrette was quoted as telling France-Inter radio. "It is a yes in principle from our side."

As just about everyone knows by now, The Da Vinci Code follows globe-trotting Harvard art historian, Professor Robert Langdon, on his quest to decipher clues found in Leonardo Da Vinci's famous paintings that unravel a centuries-old conspiracy that threatens to bring down Christianity.

Tom Hanks (news) signed on to play Langdon in November and Howard's production team has since been busy gearing up for the shoot.

According to the daily newspaper Le Parisien, producers have been scouting exterior locations around Paris as well as interiors in the Louvre's Grand Gallery where the novel opens.

Plans are also in place to roll camera in the room that holds the Mona Lisa, Da Vinci's most heralded work, which plays a critical role in Brown's mystery.

As the Louvre houses France's most prized art collections and is one of the country's most visible symbols of its rich cultural heritage, permission to film there isn't granted to just anyone.

"The Louvre is not a movie set. It is a place that receives an average of 20,000 visitors a day," added Loyrette. "That means the times really available for shooting are Tuesday closing day and nights."

Officials rarely let a bunch of grips, lighting guys and other film crew types get anywhere near its monuments and masterpieces for fear of endangering them. However, exceptions have been made in the past.

The last film allowed to shoot inside the Louvre's hallowed halls was the 1999 French ghost story, Belphegor (aka The Phantom of the Louvre), about a spirit that's taken up residence in the museum and has a penchant for swiping old Egyptian artifacts.

In the case of The Da Vinci Code, the novel has become something of a phenomenon with the book-buying public thanks to Brown's intriguing mix of math, religion, Christian mythology and secret societies that has woven a story of a conspiracy that purports to hide the truth that Jesus and Mary Magdalene were actually married and gave birth to a child.

Aside from spawning a cottage industry of tomes attempting to debunk its controversial theory, Brown's book has spurred fans to visit the Louvre to try and crack the secret codes Brown claims are hidden there. As a result, numerous independent tour operators have begun offering guided tours specifically catering to Da Vinci tourists.

With the huge boost in attendance the Louvre is expected to receive from wannabe code-crackers well beyond the movie's targeted U.S. release date of May 19, 2006, allowing Howard access makes good business sense for museum officials—that is, if all the details can be worked out.

First however, they must approve the scenes to be shot from Akiva Goldman's script and based on proposed storyboards that the Apollo 13 helmer has submitted to them.

"All the discussions must be taken up with the production because it is bound to be a busy shoot, with financial implications," Loyrette told France-Inter radio.

In related Da Vinci news, French Website, Film Deculte, reported that one of the country's biggest stars, Sophie Marceau, has been cast in the part of Langdon's partner, Sophie Neveu, the gifted cryptologist who helps crack the code.

Marceau, of course is best known Stateside for her role as the Queen in Braveheart and playing a Bond babe in The World Is Not Enough. Additionally, Jean Reno is being eyed to play hard-headed cop, Bezu Fache.

Howard and producing partner, Brian Grazer's company, Imagine Entertainment, which is supervising production, declined to comment on any aspect of the film given the controversy surrounding the project.

(^_^) hehe, i suggest you take a look, especially the comsci frosh. i like the fire extinguishing robot best! (^_^) hehe, it can actually spot fires and extinguish them; however, in the presentation, the robot made a graceful 360-degree turn before finally extinguishing the fire. (^_^) hehe, makes one worry that the robot may get burned before he is able to kill the fire. (^_^)

before we get to the FTK 2005, id like to announce first that i have a real live bunny at home!!! (^_^) hihihi. and he is so so so adorable!!!! (^_^) hehe, his name is sebastian, and he has this really soft white and gray fur. he's very matakaw, too! (^_^) just like me, haha. i just looove him! hehe, ive always wanted a bunny but never actually got to have one. (^_^) hehe, never dared to try to take care of one for fear it would die, c... hehe, anywayz, he is just so so cute! (^_^)

and oh yeah, grabe, hehe, i had an adventure last friday looking for a bakeshop...(^_^) **for those who have heard this story, i know im being redundant here, haha. (^_^) so skip this paragraph na lng** u c, i was looking for becky's kitchen. (^_^) my last class ended early that day, around 1130 to be exact, so i figured i had quite a lot of time to hunt for david's caramel cake...(^_^) i tried searching the net for any clues as to where the bakeshop is, coz all i knew was that its somewhere behind the jollibee branch across DLSU. (^_^) i found two entries in the yellow pages; one was in pasig and the other one was in singalong. (^_^) unfortunately the name singalong did not register at all, so i just dismissed the info and figured maybe the branch "near" vito cruz was a new one. (^_^) i continued searching the net for any more clues, and what i did find was a post in a blog written by a lasallian. (^_^) he/she was saying something about eating at jollibee with his/her friend, and then walking to becky's kitchen to look for food for the gods. (^_^) i thought "walking" was a big clue, so i decided to try my luck. (^_^) i went to jollibee and walked along p ocampo (formerly vito cruz) until i reached the third intersection - singalong. (^_^) the name finally registered! i turned left (deadend sa right), and saw that the house numbers were around 25++. (^_^) i vaguely remembered a "1600" in one of the search results, so i went with the only information i knew and walked on, thinking 1600 must not be very far from 25++ if other people could walk that distance. (^_^) i finally reached 19++ when i got to quirino, but then i wasnt so sure if i was still walking the same road. (^_^) hehe, i wanted to make sure it was the quirino im familiar with, so i turned left to look for the LRT along taft. (^_^) after four or five blocks i was convinced, and started heading back. (^_^) when i got back, i saw a sidecar/pedicab, so i asked the driver if he can take me to becky's kitchen. (^_^) he agreed, so i hopped in happily. (^_^) he took a different route, and eventually we ended up somewhere along p.gil. (^_^) he stopped at goldilocks and aplogized... he thought there was a becky's kitchen there! (^_^) so i just asked him to take me back to taft. (^_^) along the way, i saw a street sign that said singalong, so i asked the pedicab driver to stop. (^_^) i checked the numbers, and saw that the nearest house/institution or watever was 1609-1611. i must have looked really lost then, for a guy approached me and asked what i was looking for. (^_^) i said i wanted to get to becky's kitchen, and he pointed straight - straight towards quirino where i had just come from. (^_^) i finally asked the sidecar driver to take me a couple of blocks along singalong towards quirino while i looked for any sign of a bakeshop, but when i got to nakpil, i gave up and just asked him to take me back to taft. hehe, i finally found the bakeshop yesterday, thanks to clark, chino, and matto. (^_^) hehe, now for those who want to know where it is, its along p ocampo (the street to the right of jollibee) corner bautista street. (^_^) so dirediretso lng hanggang makita nyo ung bautista...(^_^) the becky's kitchen is on the left side of the road, and its painted white. (^_^) i recommend their caramel cakes, btw!!!! hehe, wag nyo lng ko uubusan ng stock! ;-)

haha, ok now finally for FTK...(^_^) for those who don't know, FTK stands for For the Kids. (^_^) its an annual mini-sports fest thingie for special children. (^_^) it is held in DLSU typically on either a saturday or a sunday. (^_^) so anywayz, the SDO volunteered me as an ate for today's event. (^_^) and what can i say? hehe, its a very memorable experience. (^_^) i (and two other girls - joanne and kars) got assigned to this girl with down's syndrome. (^_^) now she was a really sweet kid. in fact, i was just being very grateful that i wasnt assigned to a kid with ADHD or some other hyperactive little youngster, when she suddenly bolted off and ran! (^_^) grabe, we spent a lot of time running after her. hehe, she didn't want to go back! the culprit is Quake chocolate cake!!! (^_^) hehe, she sang and danced onstage, c. so she got a couple of chocolate fudge bars as prizes. (^_^) of course, she ate it. and she even offered some to her little niece (which we naturally had to chase up and down the stairs in Z^2 canteen, too). sugar rush... imagine the rest of my day... (^_^) hehe, it was undoubtedly very tiring for everyone. (^_^) esp the game committee members (whew, good thing i was only an ate in that event. (^_^)). (^_^) bt honestly, its also very rewarding and fulfilling. im gna join again next year. and i hope more ppol wud join me!!! (^_^) hehe! u wont regret it. its actually worth waking up a couple of hours earlier (couple nga lng ba? hmm.... hehe!) and giving up a nice warm sunday in bed or in front of the tv. (^_^)

Any joy list that we compile will no doubt include many references to the presence and power of Jesus Christ. No matter what our circumstances, joy is His gracious gift to all who trust Him. Even as Jesus faced the cross, He looked beyond its agony to the glad result of His sacrifice. He told His disciples, "These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full." (John 15:11)

boy, im sooo bored. (^_^) not much happens around here. i actually cant wait for school to begin again. hehe! i wonder how im going to make itto my PETEAMS class in time every week, though. (^_^) hehe, when i was preparing my sked i forgot to take into account the length of time i would need to make a trip from the SC office or the Tereso Larra Conference Room (LS building) to the Sports building. (^_^) hehe, my class starts at 1430, and my LA sessions typically end at that time, too. (^_^) hmm... not to mention wearing PE uniforms outside of PE classes is against the dress code... huhuhu... (^_^) hehe, oh well.

The result was the South-East Asia Earthquake and Tsunami blog, a Web site that has evolved into one of the most visited and important clearinghouses of information on the Internet about the epic tragedy. The site, which had nearly 270,000 hits through Thursday, is now run by dozens of volunteers and offers up-to-date news, hotline numbers and relief efforts details.

"What I was trying to do was put a candle in my window and say I'm trying to help," said Griffin, who started the site with help from blogger friends, some of whom he has never met. "If we can help get aid to one person, then we've done our jobs."

As it has in past calamities, the Internet has emerged as the global commons for the tsunami disaster. It's become a vital source of up-to-the-minute news worldwide, a tool used by relatives separated in the disaster to find each other, and a sorrowful digital bulletin board to identify the bodies of lost loved ones.

Chilling firsthand accounts and videos of the tsunami disaster and its aftermath have flourished, giving Internet users near-instant replays of events that happened in faraway countries.

"It's a coming together, a virtual community where the world can grieve and help," said Lee Rainie, director of the Pew Internet & American Life Project.

Griffin's site (http:// tsunamihelp.blogspot.com/) began in obscurity. But as the blogging world is wont to do, it quickly discovered the site and spread the word. The popular BoingBoing blog in San Francisco posted a link, and today it's one of the featured sites on Google's tsunami-relief page.

The disaster has had a wide-ranging effect on the Web. Mainstream news sites, for example, have become resources not only for news, but also for people to connect with each other.

The British Broadcasting Corp. (http://news.bbc.co.uk) created message boards on its news Web site where hundreds of people have published appeals for information about their relatives. CNN News did the same.

"Looking for news on Tracy & John Andrews holidaying in Phuket," wrote "Vanessa" of Britain's Hertfordshire on the BBC site. "Friends of theirs have been found in hospital."

Eddie Chan of New York wrote, "Looking for Hannah Shi. She was staying at the Phi Phi Princess Resort on Phi Phi Island in Thailand. She is 25, Chinese-American, has two earrings in her right ear. Thank you."

The Internet played a similar role after the Sept. 11 attacks in New York and Washington, D.C., in 2001. Internet communities bubbled up soon after the attacks, allowing people to share their grief and information.

"9/11 was a milestone event, and this is even more so in some ways," Rainie said. "In some ways this is a logical extension of what we learned in 9/11."

In the years since the Sept. 11 attacks, the concept of citizen journalism -- where everyday Internet users feed the daily stream of news -- has gained a stronger foothold. More and more, people turn to blogs first as authoritative sources of information about major events.

"You can get a really good consensus picture of what's going on that's stronger than any one news organization could offer," said Jimmy Wales, founder of the online encyclopedia Wikipedia. "So many people are on the ground in different places. And people pick up very quickly which are the bloggers to read, and they bring that information to the forefront and amplify it."

Volunteers at Wikipedia, a collaborative site that can be edited by virtually anyone, quickly created a Web page dedicated to the earthquake and tsunamis. Users have posted photos, graphics and a robust list of links to other sources of information. As of Thursday, the page had been edited 1,500 times, Wales said.

"It's a place for people to synthesize all of the information and sort through it," Wales said.

Amateur video of the event has been especially popular. Gripping camcorder footage, shot by tourists, of tsunamis smashing into Phuket, Sri Lanka, Patong Beach and other areas has been posted on several sites, including Waxy.org, run by Web programmer Andy Baio.

Baio's site was so overrun with Internet users downloading the videos that he uploaded some to the Internet Archive, the San Francisco organization that provides free video hosting as part of its digital library services.

"The distributed nature of blogs, which allow you to post to anywhere from anywhere, augmented by video, it's a new opportunity," said Brewster Kahle, co-founder of the digital archive.

Closer to the tragedy itself, the Internet has fulfilled a grim but necessary role. Local hospitals have posted photos of tsunami victims in the hopes that friends or relatives will be able to identify them. The corpse photos are sometimes gruesome, the victims' bodies tagged with simple white numbered cards for identification.

Perhaps the most poignant example of the power of the Internet came earlier this week, when the picture of a Swedish toddler found alive in Phuket was posted online. His uncle saw the photo and claimed the boy Tuesday. Wednesday, the boy was reunited with his father at a Phuket hospital.

The disaster has -- for the moment -- changed the character of the Internet, with thousands of corporate, non-profit and personal Web sites dedicating their home pages to the event.

"Events like this change the online environment," Rainie said. "Web sites that have no connection to the news, or don't have much to do with Asia, are now dedicated to this. It shows what a global village the Internet has become."

Stephanie Siao

Stephanie, sometimes called Siao-Siao or the White Lady (after her skin color), is a really cool person with a big heart. She’s also very smart and typically gets high grades in all of her tests. She is not your average nerd, however, as she decidedly knows how to have fun. In school, she is usually seen hanging out with Mary Ann with the latest bestseller in hand. An avid reader, she gets easily irritated at people who disturb her when she’s reading one of her favorite romance novels or suspense thrillers. She’s also very analytic and critical, and you can argue with her about anything under the sun. She is fairly studious and diligent, although she gets really lazy at times. She doesn’t study for her Chinese exams altogether, and only barely breezes through her math textbooks. On top of all that, Steps is a lovely young lady who has made many boys fall for her during her high school days. Sad to say, however, she also broke almost as many hearts, for Steps is decidedly frank about her thoughts and feelings and likes to get straight to the point. Moreover, she is renowned for her artistic skills, and is often seen decorating blackboards and corkboards or simply doodling on one of her Chinese notebooks. All in all, Steps is one friendly, lovable, caring, studious, argumentative, passionate, and thoughtful friend you would not want to lose.

Jackielyn Sy

Jackielyn is one of the few people who can easily carry the title Miss Congeniality. She is funny and very entertaining, and she enjoys making friends left and right. It also seems as if she had a lifetime supply of energy inside her. She is always very active and full of life, and she believes that a day spent sleeping is just as good as wasted time. When it comes to food, Jackielyn is generally very finicky and choosy; however, when she gets the food she wants, she literally gorges! Moreover, she unbelievably never gains any weight! She always maintains a slim physique that is brimming with vitality and vigor. She is decidedly very adventurous and always on the go. She is also a master of the Chinese language, excelling in Chinese literary compositions and exams. Finally, she doesn’t easily forget any of her friends and acquaintances, and takes advantage of every opportunity to make new ones or keep in touch with the old.

Janelle Sy

One of the wackiest people in the batch, Janelle is very enjoyable to be with. She is endearingly makulit and sings virtually anywhere. She absolutely adores children and is often seen playing with kindergarten kids. A lovely young lady with a pretty face and long legs, Janelle is also model-material. On top of all that, Janelle is one wonderful friend who is always there for her batch mates – ready to listen to, help out, and cry with a troubled friend. She is decidedly very caring and thoughtful, and she totally loves hugs and kisses. In fact, she gives hugs to her friends most generously and, when other people come up and hug her friends only to leave her out, she would jokingly remark “Bakit ako wala?” Her barkada love having her along and listening to her many jokes and hirits. Being very considerate and caring, Janelle never hesitates to come up to a seemingly distressed friend and ask him/her “Ok ka lang?”, which is almost immediately followed by an “Ok lang yan!” She is, however, most willing to listen to other people’s problems and offer her help where it is wanted. All in all, Janelle is an exceptionally charming girl who seems shy and quiet at first but is really brimming with laughter, songs, and her uniquely Janelle-ish remarks.

Michelle Yap

Michelle is quiet and relatively shy in class, but when you get to know her, you’ll realize she’s actually quite talkative! She is very responsible, hard-working, and diligent, and she definitely has the knack to succeed in life. In spite of her excellent academic standing and awards, she remains humble and studies hard. She is also very helpful, especially when it comes to explaining trigonometry or Chinese history! She likes to make sure that everybody understands the lesson, and the batch feels really blessed to have her as a friend. She is also really funny and nice, and has given many valuable pieces of advice to her friends and batch mates. She’s the Chinese valedictorian and rightly so, for she is one of those people in the batch who is really proficient in the language. She comes up with really nice and interesting compositions in Chinese and virtually aces all the subjects in her Chinese report card! She is also the third honors in English academic excellence, and has been a consistent honor student ever since nursery. A diligent student who knows how to prioritize her studies, Michelle is definitely a most wonderful friend, daughter, and sister.

Joyce Yu

Joyce is one great friend and kabarkada you would never want to lose. She loves to joke, eat, read, and eat. She delights in English novels, and she reads really fast, too. She loves eating, and her batch mates wonder how she can possibly maintain her weight and slim build despite her appetite. She’s also delightfully makulit and cheerful. An amiable person who loves to laugh as well as make other people laugh, Joyce is truly a wonderful blessing to her friends. With her vigor and exuberance, she very rarely gets serious and is always brimming with animation and vitality. A lovable and beautiful person both inside and out, Joyce is one friend you just can’t afford to lose. And although she’s left for the U.S., she will undoubtedly remain in the hearts of all of her batch mates for the bundle of joyful memories she left behind and for the lasting impressions she has made on all of us.

Cristina Bantaran

A Tiong Lian cheerleader, Tina is held in high esteem by many of her batch mates, especially her barkada. She is known to be extremely patient and very rarely loses her temper. She also serves as the encourager and the eternal optimist among her group of friends and cheerleaders; however, she purportedly becomes the ultimate pessimist when the predicament in question directly involves her. An exquisite young lady, Tina is also very humble and relatively shy. Although she dances most gracefully and boldly during basketball games and tournaments, she never did join any of the annual Uno FunFests because she claims she doesn’t dare play in front of a huge crowd. When with friends, however, she automatically reverts to her charmingly playful mood, often rebutting and arguing with people who jokingly assert that they are more beautiful than she. A diligent student, Tina always gets satisfactory grades in her exams, even after firmly stating to her friends that she doesn’t understand the lesson and is sure to fail. She is also an exceptionally trustworthy friend who is eager to help others and pray with them in times of trouble or dejection.

Clarice Capistrano

CN # 5 of the batch and another lovely Tiong Lian cheerleader, Clarice is known not only for her dance moves but also for her courage and assertiveness. She can and will defend her friends and will never leave them alone. She’s usually brimming with animation and laughter; however, she decidedly knows when to keep quiet and hear her friends out, especially when they are having problems. She’s characteristically emotional, is very talented, and knows when as well as how to speak up. She is most enjoyable to hang out with, and she has made quite a lot of invaluable memories and distinct impressions in the hearts of the people close to her. Lastly, Clarice has a penchant for butterflies, possibly because a butterfly’s grace, beauty, and assiduousness can be closely associated with this impressive and exceptionally sweet girl. All in all, Clar, as she is fondly called, is a loyal, humble, and talented friend who is worth making and keeping for life.

Sharleen Chua

Respectable and talented, Sharleen is a remarkable girl with an impressive gift for craft-making and the arts. She can make the dullest pieces and places come alive with color and style, and she has repeatedly proven as much by thinking up decorative ideas during school programs and class projects. She even made a whole bunch of delightfully charming dream catchers for her friends and batch mates during her senior year. Irrefutably a great listener, Sharleen’s friends love to have her on the other end of the line and talk about anything from boys to akafellas. She’s also very thoughtful and is always concerned for her friends’ well-being. Furthermore, she is a lot of fun to be with and her friends all concur with one another that there are never any dull moments when she is around. All in all, Sharleen is an outstandingly artistic girl possessing a delicate beauty, a laudable wit, and an imaginative mind.

Sobrina Ibo-Chua

Sobrina is one of those people you’d most like to be with. She is almost always smiling, is very animated, and is brimming with stories to share. You hear her giggling all the way across the classroom, and suddenly you get all giggly and vibrant, too. She’s known for her kindness, pakisama, and, of course, her charm. Boys across batches and even across schools can’t help but fall for her cute smile, her bubbly personality, and her dance moves. Class secretary of Section A, Tiong Lian cheerleader, and an honor student ever since, Sobrina has almost all the good qualities other girls covet. She’s an exceptionally good dancer and student and, to top it off, even has a very exciting love life which she eagerly shares with her barkada. Her friends love spending time with her because she is always very enthusiastic and vibrant, and she decidedly knows how to have fun. Far from being a killjoy, she is one of the liveliest people in the batch and is good at cheering people up. Friendly, jolly, graceful, and bright, Sobrina Ibo-Chua is one friend that’s definitely worth making and one girl that’s sure to go far and succeed in life.

Lakeisha Laddaran

Keisha, as she is fondly called by her batch mates and friends, is yet another talented Tiong Lian cheerleader. She is Sobrina’s best friend and is also very kind and caring, especially to the people close to her. Her friends say that she has a really big heart and that when she loves, she pours all her heart into the relationship and the person involved. Like most other cheerleaders, she is a heartthrob and has made many a boy both inside and outside Uno High fall for her. Although seemingly snobbish at first, Keisha is an ultimate example of a person with a soft heart. She is very lachrymose, emotional, and helpful. Her barkada typically run to her for advice, and her home is, quite literally, open to anyone who wishes to come in. Almost all of the people in the batch has gone into her house at one time or another and been generously treated to a tasty lunch or merienda in between dance practice sessions or group meetings. On the whole, Keisha is a trendy and friendly young lady abounding with love, patience, and care, particularly towards her closest friends and family.

hehe, lolz! (^_^) played for him yesterday and today, actually. which is why he didn't win either game. haha, not that i intentionally made him lose, of course...(^_^) anywayz, ill b playing for him for the next week or so.

hmm... im addicted to chip's challenge, haha. (^_^) its a game wherein u collect all the chips to advance to the next level. (^_^) its actually a very old game, but i love it! makes a person think and all.

and oh yeah, shopaholic is great! (^_^) i just finished the first book earlier... Confessions of a Shopaholic. i must admit the story doesn't have much of an intelligent plot, though. (^_^) nonetheless its absolutely hilarious. perfect for long rainy days or long boring vacations. (^_^) hehe, its a very light read, and the language is very easy to understand. (^_^) on the contrary, ive just started on Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt. its a pulitzer prize winner according to the cover, and i must admit the story is not too bad. its an autobiography, and the story is both humorous and heartbreaking because it is written by and narrated from the point of view of poor little McCourt. i wonder how he can possibly remember all the details, though. (^_^) the autobiography began when he was just barely four. (^_^) oh well, nonetheless its a good memoir. my only comment is that its kinda difficult to read, with all the "missus" and "arse" in it... i hate the language actually.. (^_^) hehe, i find it a bit offensive and too colloquial for the contemporary reader to fully grasp the meaning of the text. (^_^) but well, im running out of interesting things to read around here, haha. (^_^) and i just got the book as a prize somewhere. rather than read the rest of Who Cooked the Last Supper?, i figured id finish it first. (^_^) i dont recommend it, hehe, unless ur a really skilled reader and all. (^_^) hehe, although ud probably like it if u enjoyed To Kill a Mockingbird and all those classics. (^_^)

Dianne Chan

Dianne is an outstanding girl who has a strong passion for dancing. A Tiong Lian cheerleader, she enjoys dancing so much that she is often seen doing a few graceful moves here and there in the middle of animated conversations. She is very persevering and almost never surrenders in trials. She believes that success in 9% inspiration and 91% perspiration. Her batch mates admire her not only for her dancing and time management skills, but also for her ever-present sense of humor. In return, Dianne is very proud and very fond of her batch mates. Upon first seeing her, people tend to get the impression that she is mataray and masungit. In reality, though, she’s so much fun to be with and often flashes her killer smile. (When you see her laughing all by herself, don’t call the asylum just yet. She’s probably just tickled by the hem of her skirt or by stray folds on the underside of her pants. J) Her favorite subjects include Mathematics and Science, and she dreams of becoming a medical technologist someday. All in all, this girl is friendly, hardworking, responsible, and cute – definitely a must-have friend!

Lourdes Chan

Lourdes, a.k.a. Balagtas or our Filipino dictionary, is through and through a master of the Filipino language. She puts her heart into the things she does, and she has composed tons of literary masterpieces, which made her Filipino teachers very proud. Besides excelling in the Filipino essay writing division, she has also garnered lots of awards and prizes in Filipino declamation and poetry composition contests.

In terms of character, Lourdes is someone with whom you can comfortably share your secrets with. She is a very sweet and true friend who is always willing to help her batch mates with problems in school, life, and even money (as long as they don’t borrow any more than P20!J) She may not be very good at giving advice, but she is one of the best listeners in the batch. She also is very carefree and leads an ostensibly happy and untroubled life even when she is facing piles of seemingly insuperable problems at home. She particularly dislikes people who are arrogant and bossy. She is also very independent and tough in character. J

Cheryl May Ching

Cheryl’s smile never fails to warm the hearts of people around her. She’s a really sweet person who laughs a lot. In fact, she sometimes laughs so loud that people nearby can’t help but laugh with her. She is also very helpful and selfless. She is always willing to give anything she can for the people she cares for. She loves her friends very much and talks to them for hours on the phone. One can talk to her about anything or nothing and enjoy her company just the same. She gets a little bit cranky during nights when she has unfinished projects to work on, though. She is very creative and skilled in the arts of décor, so it is not at all surprising that school projects often fall on her – and her alone. All in all, Cheryl is nice, humble, thoughtful, responsible, and very trustworthy. An extraordinary friend who is irreplaceably special, she’s so much fun to be with, especially when she’s all giggly, talkative, and crazy. Like most Uneans, she’s great at cramming and can stay up for hours trying to make it to a deadline that’s set for the next morning. Her friends love her very much and sincerely believe she is the best. J

Catherine Chuacokiong

A tall person is almost always seen to be intimidating and tough; Catherine, however, is one special exception. The tallest girl in her batch, if not in the entire school, Catherine is sometimes mistaken for a model. Even with her towering height, however, she has this enticing aura around her that exudes both friendliness and shyness. Actually, she isn’t at all that quiet and is in fact super fun to be with. She sometimes tells jokes that are corny, but in a way that makes the joke incredibly funny as well. She is also very cheerful and tolerant, as well as helpful and inspirational. She isn’t likely to quit on anyone until he/she gets over his/her problem. In fact, she can be a bit makulit – in a nice way. She is one of those people who have hearts of gold; she never speaks badly of anyone, and she has the ability to see the good in each and everyone. Catherine is also perseverant and cannot easily be put down. A responsible student, she does everything she has to do ahead of time. She is loyal to her family and friends and care even for those people whom she doesn’t know. Her batch mates may call her names like capre or World Trade Center, but deep inside, Catherine has made an impression in the hearts of all her batch mates. J

Stephanie Yap

Helpful, kind, and trustworthy – that’s Stephanie! Anybody can count on her ever-so-patient listening skills or her extraordinary willingness to help others. She is very reliable and very rarely loses her temper with anyone. Her attitude is her most valuable asset, attracting new friends and constantly making her even more likeable and loveable to everyone. In addition, she’s also blessed with a most beautiful singing voice. When she sings, people can’t help but listen in awe and allow themselves to be carried away by the sweet quality of her voice. All in all, Stephanie is a very special kind of friend, the type who is able to make your day bright and never cease to surprise you (like that first time she cheered wildly during a basketball game and disproved her classmates’ assumptions that she was quiet and on the shy side, ha-ha). This girl has helped a lot of people and has undoubtedly made a unique and lasting impression on every one of her batch mates. J

Eunice Ang

An exceedingly nice and thoughtful person, Eunice virtually has friends from all over the globe. Famous for being a people-person, she is very affable and jovial, and can make even the quietest people open up and become as talkative as she. Although she sometimes acts charmingly childish and immature, she knows when to stop acting foolishly and start getting serious. In fact, she was very active in Uno High, holding positions in the Student Council and in class executive boards. She is also a batch representative of Seniors ’04 and has always been very enthusiastic when organizing and handling school programs and class activities. Eunice Ang is and will undoubtedly remain one of the most remembered students in the batch, mainly not because of her excellent organizational skills, but rather because of the many lives she changed and the countless hearts she comforted. Renowned for being exceptionally understanding and patient, many people instinctively turn to her in times of trouble and distress. Pictured as the eternally smiling girl with the cute eyes and the mystifying power of spreading cheer everywhere she goes, Eunice is nothing short of a blessing to her friends and family.

Albigail Anglim

More popularly known as Abbey, this girl is endowed with blessings that many other girls her age dream of. Many boys have fallen for her natural beauty, intelligence, and wit, and she has continually proven herself as charming as others think, if not more so. She has her own way of making other people laugh, and is very rarely seen without her distinctive smile. She’s a fun-loving person with courage and a fair share of self-esteem, never backing out on challenges and dares. She is also a very sweet and loyal friend, one who will stick with you till the end. A voracious reader and a commendable writer, she served as part of the literary staff of the school paper and knows a humongous array of English words. Despite faring well in academics, this girl knows how to have fun and frequently hangs out with friends. All in all, Abbey is irrefutably a gem of a friend who will stay in the hearts of her batch mates and friends for a very long time.

Sheena Astilla

Sheena, typically thought of as shy and quiet, is really brimming with witty jokes and infectious laughter. She’s so much fun to have around, especially when she tells stories in that distinctively humorous way. No doubt a beauty and one of the most talented people in the batch, Sheena is both a skilled drummer and the future doctor of her barkada. Her friends all assert that she’s indeed a very rare find and should not be carelessly let go of. Although a little bit on the shy side especially inside the classroom, Sheena has made a difference in the lives of the people around her. On the whole, Sheena is one loyal and trustworthy friend packed with artistic gifts, a big heart, and big dreams. Beautiful, humble, and kind, Sheena is definitely one must-have friend who will never leave you hanging and will always be glad to offer her help and company in exchange for your smile.

woohoo, i love dan brown!!! (^_^) haha, his writing is just commendable. and all his works are immensely satisfying and enjoyable...(^_^) i just finished the digital fortress today (cept for the last chapter anywayz...;p), and i loved it!!! haha, david becker is a most adorable and romantic character...(^_^) the novel is very suspenseful and is full of twists, like all of brown's other works. also well-researched and well-edited. (^_^) all the techno stuff in the digital fortress is also very interesting, and it even has a little bit of chemistry in it...(^_^) hihi! perfect. :-) once again, brown masterfully weaves together the elements of science, technology, computing, romance, treachery, love, and honor into a most suspenseful yet realistic plot. (^_^)

nthing compared to the past two days...(^_^) haha, bt at least i got a good long rest. or did i? hehe, read digital fortress, played the pc, and ate all day, haha. (^_^) oh yeah, ive got gud news for all the dance mania addiks out there! (^_^) hehe, i dunno about rp, but in sm the price per game is down to 7pesos (1token only). woohoo! twice as many songs for our money's worth...(^_^)

oh yeah, david doesn't beat us only in the trivia tournaments; he tried dance mania for the first time yesterday, and he was great!! (^_^) haha, nahiya na lng nga ako eh... i remembered how i fared when i first played dance mania, haha...(^_^) go, david!!!

was in DLSU at around 0830 to submit my ENGLONE portfolio, but then i had to photocopy my final paper for the second major essay because the department required a separate copy from that inside the portfolio for the second major essay per se. (^_^) met paul there, so we went to uno high to visit my high school!!! its the last day of classes there as well, so i disturbed a few classes while touring paul. after talking with my fave teacher (;p), we headed to SSHS to attend the fair. i went wall-climbing, skating, and painting, haha. i wasnt able to climb all the way to the top, though. barely climbed at all, actually, haha. (^_^) the footholds were too far between, see... so i could not lift myself up to the next foothold and i got stuck somewhere near the bottom. i could not and did not exactly skate either, haha. (^_^) but all the trying (thanks to maus, paul, and chino for the help! ;p) made me hungry, so we went to jollibee to have lunch. (^_^) when we came back, i bought one of those ceramic things that was on sale, and started painting it (surrounded by a bunch of kids ;p) while maus and the rest went looking for something to do. (^_^) eventually they all came back and waited for me to finish, and some of my high school friends also arrived and joined me. (^_^) finally i went back to uno, toured maus a bit, then left to buy mrs rivera a little christmas gift. unfortunately she had already left for home when i got back, so i decided to just give the bath confetti to melody for the SC kris kringle thingie. (^_^) just when i thought there were no more surprises left for the day, someone surprised me with an invitation to dinner. ;p and that's why i just got home now. (^_^) the end. (^_^)

PS. too bad i didnt get to play dance mania earlier when we went out for dinner, though... hehe, they were about to close already, c... :-) oh wel, im going back there or to SM manila tomorrow anywayz. (^_^)

Foreword:

Although written by a novice hand, this collection serves as a testimony to the gradual and arduous path that writers take to hone and further enhance their writing skills. The first two entries are among the last to be written as part of this portfolio, yet I place them at the beginning as a demonstration of what the course had produced from me and as part of the bragging rights that finishing an ENGLONE course and an entire collection of literary works grant. Many of the works in this mini-portfolio are short and informal, and may not offer a lot of insight to veteran authors and readers alike, yet I include them with the hope that they serve the purpose of providing entertainment and, mayhap, an arena for further discussion and debate that might eventually lead to an improved piece of writing, integrating the thoughts of reader and author to better serve the taste of other contemporary readers.

Students’ “Write” To Speak

Final Outline:

Introduction: I have always been a strong advocate of campus journalism and free expression; therefore, one particular news excerpt from a prominent DLSU student publication caught my eye and kindled a sense of ire at the injustice meted by some school officials to a commendable college editor.
The said editor is Meryll Yan, editor-in-chief of The Lasallian.

Miss Yan wrote an editorial against the Office of Student Activities (OSAc) last September 24, 2004.
OSAc sent Miss Yan a letter forcing her to retract what she had written.
Miss Yan refused and stressed her points.
A disciplinary case was finally filed against Miss Yan.

OSAc stated its points in the October 27 issue of Pahayagang Plaridel, another student publication here in DLSU.

They pointed out that Miss Yan lacked the necessary grounds for her allegations.
They also stressed that Miss Yan’s editorial brought the name of the university into disrepute.
They found her article way too biased and unfair.
They argued that Miss Yan failed to get OSAc’s side regarding her opinion before having it published.

Many rebuttals can be offered against OSAc’s arguments.

An editorial is a place for publishing personal opinions.
Every individual has freedom of speech.
Miss Yan should be praised and commended for being brave and resolute enough to write against a formidable institutional office.
The OSAc is being very unprofessional and childish by employing the disciplinary office against Miss Yan.
As such, the OSAc is abusing its administrative powers.

Free speech/publication offers many advantages.

Honest opinions are promoted and brought to light.

Student publications are an opportunity to pinpoint the faults of the institution and take steps to address these faults.
Student publications are an outlet for any negative feeling/s of the students concerning a university procedure or policy.

Student publications offer an unparalleled opportunity to enrich the students’ writing abilities and critical thinking skills.

Permitting the publication of students’ opinions is one way of treating college students as mature and responsible individuals.
Campus publications stress the license – and need – of writers to be frank and direct about their points.

A similar case concerning the extent of college students’ right to express occurred in the US.

A group of students published an article launched investigations of wrote about improprieties in the school.

They wrote of grade inflations.
They wrote of overly generous stipends.

The dean told the printer to have him review and approve the school paper before printing them.
The said group of writers filed a case against the dean.
The federal court ruled the dean guilty of suppressing freedom of expression.
College students’ right to express carries huge importance in the US.

Conclusion: The right of college editors to free speech should be reiterated and stressed, especially here in DLSU, in order to prevent the overstepping of their rights by abusive school authorities.

Final Paper:

I have always been a strong advocate of campus journalism and free expression; therefore, one particular news excerpt from a prominent De La Salle University (DLSU) student publication caught my eye and kindled a sense of ire at the injustice meted by some school officials to a commendable college editor. As many Lasallians have heard by now, a serious rift has recently formed between the Office of Student Activities (OSAc) and the various student organizations. Consequently, the editor-in-chief of The Lasallian published her views on the matter; however, she was held in contempt and even unjustly punished by the OSAc. Incidents like this serve only to deter other writers and indirectly command all college editors to be submissive and meek to the authority of school officials; therefore, I would like to remind the entire student body that campus editors, acting as the voice of the students, should be given the independence and freedom to write about any college issue without fear of incurring the wrath of authority figures.

In the September 24 issue of The Lasallian, Meryll Yan, editor-in-chief (EIC) of the said publication, wrote an editorial entitled “The Eff-Word.” The article reflected her opposition against the bureaucracy being practiced by OSAc, as well as the extent of power the office has over the approval/disapproval of student activities. Her article was well-accepted by the students, and before long, it had begun circulating in the form of email messages as well. OSAc apparently did not like being the butt of criticisms and eventually decided to send Miss Yan a letter forcing her to retract what she had written. As any self-respecting writer would have done, Miss Yan refused and stressed her points. Both letters were also circulated via email and chat rooms, and more and more students began talking about OSAc’s disorganization and ineptitude. A month after the editorial was published, word came out that a disciplinary case had been filed against Miss Yan, accusing her of committing “acts that put the name of the university into disrepute.”

On October 27, 2004, Pahayagang Plaridel, another DLSU student publication, issued a front-page article stating OSAc’s points. OSAc wrongly pointed out that Miss Yan, being a writer and thus uninvolved in the planning and filing of student activities, lacked both the personal experience and the necessary grounds for her allegations. They argued that since Miss Yan failed to get OSAc’s side regarding her opinions, her editorial came out too biased and unfair.

Not taking OSAc’s organizational faults or Miss Yan’s previous involvement in the Student Council into account, many rebuttals can be offered against OSAc’s arguments. For one, I believe that an editorial is first and foremost really a place for publishing one’s personal opinions. Furthermore, it is stated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights that “Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.” [Article 19] The 1987 Constitution of the Republic of the Philippines likewise states that “No law shall be passed abridging the freedom of speech, of expression, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble and petition the government for redress of grievances.” [Article III, Section 4 of the Bill of Rights] Consequently, every individual – whether student or official – has the freedom of speech and expression, and no one has the right to suppress or take away that freedom. In fact, I sincerely believe that Miss Yan should be praised and commended for being brave and resolute enough to write against a formidable institutional office. I think that values such as these characterize a true Lasallian – one who is committed to the truth and does not shirk her responsibilities as a leader, a follower, or a writer. Looking at the situation from this vantage, the OSAc appears very unprofessional and childish in employing the disciplinary office against Miss Yan. It is as if the personnel manning the office simply got pissed off, decided to hit back but failed, and finally decided to draw out the “big guns.” As such, they are irrefutably abusing their administrative powers in order to ensure the continuation and perpetuation of their organization.

Indeed, what happened to Miss Yan was totally unjust and uncalled for; however, her account and courage served to fuel the students’ desire for fair process and reminded her staffers – as well as other concerned students – of the many advantages of free speech/publication. I believe that she is a most respectable model of a laudable campus journalist and editor; her experiences serve as an eye-opener to firmly and finally push for the protection of students’ right to expression.

She reminds us that through free speech, honest opinions are encouraged and brought to light. Indeed, student publications are an opportunity to pinpoint the faults of the institution and help address these faults. Moreover, they are an outlet for any negative feeling/s the students may have concerning a university procedure or policy. Student publications – especially editorials – also offer an unparalleled opportunity not only to enhance the author’s writing abilities, but also to enrich everyone’s critical thinking skills. Permitting the publication of students’ opinions is one significant step towards treating college students as mature and responsible individuals. Also, campus publications stress the license – and need – of writers and other students alike to be frank and direct about their points. This, in turn, prepares individuals for the road ahead, where dilly-dallying and indirectness can cause a person to lose his/her job or prevent him/her from attaining corporate success.

To further stress the importance of every student’s freedom of speech and the need to recognize this freedom of ours, let me state a similar case that occurred in the U.S. The disagreement started when a group of student writers launched investigations and eventually published an article about several improprieties in their school. They wrote of grade inflations and overly generous stipends; however, when the dean learned about the said article, he ordered the printer to have him review and approve the school paper before printing it. The authors, feeling shortchanged and disadvantaged, filed a case in court. The federal court finally ruled the dean guilty of suppressing freedom of expression, illustrating the huge importance that U.S. governments place on college students’ right to expression.

There is a need to prevent such injustices as the one Miss Yan faced from happening again. Her experiences should be enough to wake us up and unite us towards one goal – that of protecting our rights and stressing the rights and roles of campus editors in the university. Unlike in the US, Philippine governments and courts take a much longer time in resolving conflicts. Indeed, many Philippine courts purportedly neglect and/or delay “small-time” cases, or those that do not bring in much money; moreover, DLSU, reputably a premier university and one of the best in the country, holds a significant responsibility of reflecting the kind of education and schooling that our country offers to its youth. Conclusively, the right of college editors to free speech should therefore be reiterated right here and now in DLSU in order to prevent the overstepping of these rights by abusive school authorities as well as to prevent any further complications from arising.

Consequently, the child is discouraged to think for him/herself and to take action in the pursuit of his or her own wants. Often, many Chinese parents fail to appreciate/recognize this ability of children to think and decide for themselves because tradition places an emphasis on the values of obedience, conformity, and discipline. In fact, there used to be a universal belief/saying that goes “A child is seen, not heard,” implying that parents alone know how to distinguish between right and wrong or good and bad. For a parenting style that has survived countless generations and goes on to exist in many families even now, authoritarian parenting does have its own advantages. For one, discipline is called for in the industrial workplace, as disobedience and disrespect to a superior may render an employee jobless or otherwise penalized. Also, disciplinary action is known to repress criminal behavior among individuals by discouraging any acts that might deviate from accepted norms and values. Finally, the enforcement of strict curfews and rules does have some advantages as the physical safety of the child is indubitably promoted and secured.

Granted that authoritarian parenting has some important contributions to a child’s well-being, it also has many disadvantages, specifically on the part of the children. One of them is that the values encouraged and ultimately instilled by authoritarian parents are counterproductive in today’s society. It can hardly be argued that these values and traits were, for a long time, largely beneficial and highly productive; however, most countries are progressing from a structural and bureaucratic workforce to a more flexible organization where individual creativity and critical thinking matter more than discipline and blind conformity. Another probable consequence of an extremely restrictive upbringing is for the child to fail to establish a sense of security and trust in the world in which he or she lives. As such, he or she is very likely to lose initiative with his lack of autonomy and face the world with the constant nag of shame and self-doubt. Psychological research even shows that authoritarian parenting is linked with poor communication skills, passivity, and inferiority because the individual never developed the courage to speak his or her thoughts. Moreover, as the child enters his or her adolescent years and starts looking for meaning and a sense of existence, the continual nagging and restriction by his or her parents may cause him or her to lose his or her identity and instead largely borrow from those of his or her parents. He or she is also deprived of a healthy social life because of the overly strict rules imposed by his or her parents. With the lack of visible signs of parental love, then, he or she may feel unloved and thus lack the ability and/or readiness to love later on. Lastly, name calling and criticisms irrefutably go a long way by gradually changing and downgrading a person’s self-concept or self-worth. Given these potential problems, it is apparent that a new approach to parenting needs to be introduced. These are then ideally the guiding principles behind the authoritative style of parenting, which is becoming more and more popular in advanced countries such as the U.S. Authoritative parenting and authoritarian parenting may sound similar to most people, but they are actually rather different. For example, when a child commits a mistake, an authoritative parent talks to him or her with love and the sincere desire to educate; an authoritarian one, though probably with as much desire to make the child learn and repent, typically fails to go through this stage and immediately takes punitive action. To further illustrate, such an incident actually happened to my friend while he was on vacation with the rest of his family. He had been hanging around resting when his little brother threw an empty cola can against the wall. Naturally, my friend reacted in surprise and anger. Unfortunately, their father came out of the room and, hearing only the clang and the raised voice of my friend, hit him across the face. There were no questions asked, no time for the deeply hurt son to defend himself or state what really happened. An authoritative parent, on the other hand, acknowledges that no person is capable of not committing any mistake throughout his or her lifetime and understands that it is important for the child to learn some things by experience. Furthermore, he or she recognizes the fact that every individual needs a happy and thriving social life in order to grow up healthily and be able to establish an identity. Consequently, allowing children to spend time with friends and giving them the freedom to engage in extracurricular activities typically characterize a flexible and authoritative environment. Finally, creativity and independence, which are the focus of jobs in the postindustrial and/or technological era, are highly encouraged in authoritative parenting and are very likely to serve the children when they enter the world of business.

All these should show how the traditional style of parenting employed by the more conservative Chinese affects their children extensively and adversely. It also shows, however, that succeeding generations need not exactly experience this same restrictive and restraining environment. Today’s youth, therefore, is burdened with the greater responsibility of effecting change, letting go of past aches and resentments, and ultimately resolving and learning to break away from tradition and start anew. There is, then, a need for the Chinese people to rethink their stand on authoritarian parenting and bring about change for a better, healthier, and happier generation of Chinese achievers, possibly by embracing and taking on authoritative parenting in their own homes.

A breakup can be one of the most shattering events of one's life, or it can be most liberating. In my case, it was both.

It was a cold, dreary night, and I was beginning to feel one of those inexplicable bouts of depression. They'd been coming to me more often lately, and I had no idea why. As expected, the beep of my cell phone rang out in the silence of my room, breaking through my thoughts and bringing me back to reality. Without warning, one of the most life-changing text messages I've ever received had just embedded itself in my phone's memory. That night had been one of the most heart-wrenching moments of my life. I felt so alone, so violated, and so wretched. The hurt had been hardly bearable, but the words of my friends and family, coupled with God's grace, soon relieved me of the pain I was going through. From there, I felt in myself a renewed sense of confidence, a changed perception of what is important, and an understanding of myself that is much deeper than before.

A common belief held by many people today is that a strict and rigid upbringing serves the child better than soft words of encouragement. Such an environment, however, is often characterized by negative and harsh criticisms from the parents. Although these may serve to push the child towards attaining further self-development, they may also adversely affect the child. For instance, common reason tells us that criticisms go a long way by lowering a person's self-esteem; coming from the two persons a child adores most in his/her formative years, this effect may become permanent. Harsh words may make the child feel unloved and unworthy of praise from his/her elders and peers. They may also elicit a certain level of resentment towards the parents because the child begins to think he/she will never be good enough for them. In some cases, criticisms sow fear in the heart of the child so that he/she no longer dares to try new things because he/she is afraid of making mistakes and incurring other people's wrath. On the other hand, the child may try to spread himself/herself too thinly in order to achieve the many goals his/her parents expect of him/her. There are even extreme cases when the child eventually learns to rebel and fight back.

Feminism, which promotes gender equality and strives to eradicate double standards, is a relatively recent movement. Women today have become much more aware and empowered than the generations before them. When women before have limited rights to legal documents and may not draft their own wills, now they may do so. Modern-day women value independence and privacy; before, married women were not allowed to keep their own wages, hold certain positions, or even own properties. In terms of family roles, it used to be legal for women to be beaten by their husbands as long as the stick used is not thicker than the thumb – hence the idiomatic expression "rule of thumb." In contrast, women of today have roles not only in the family, but also in the workplace, that are being increasingly recognized. They are no longer limited to housework and child rearing, but may work in offices, or even in jobs alongside those of their husbands. Whereas women before were kept in the house and were not even granted education, women today are free to pursue any career they want. The patriarchal society of before is drawing nearer and nearer to a close, especially with the passage of laws such as the women's right to suffrage and the inclusion of women in the field of sports. All in all, women today have more freedom, although they are still viewed by some men as mere sexual objects who are trying hard to enter and change a society of male domination. (Macionis, 2003)

Friendship Guides, Not Binds

There have been many psychology books, self-help books, and even fairy tales that discuss friendship and try to determine its "rules." I believe, however, that all of these so-called rules point to one basic weakness of humans – the desire to "own." In the same way that animals are caged, classified, and characterized by personnel in the zoo, many people feel the innate need to permanently keep someone special, the desire to classify friends based on mutual self-disclosure, and the tendency to claim how well they know their friends. Animals kept in cages, are, however, known to act quite differently from those that are allowed to run free. This inconsistency/dissimilarity is due to the fact that caged animals are not able to grow, evolve, and interact with others of their kind. Even though they are well-cared for by the people manning the zoo, they have little respect for these people because deep inside, they feel resentment. They have little love for their providers simply because they want their freedom. If they could read those nasty placards hanging in front of their cages, I'm sure they would be even more infuriated. The classifications and descriptions written on these placards give the animals a characterization they would carry for the rest of their lives or until they break free of the bars holding them in their cages and blocking their way to freedom. In the same way, a person who claims and boasts to other people that he/she knows his/her friend inside out, that he/she can predict how his/her friend will act in any situation, and that he/she can write an entire profile on that person, is really barring his/her friend from changing, from being himself/herself to others, and from "evolving" into someone else. In the same way that animals that are free to experience the world and face all its challenges become the fittest of its kind to survive, a friendship that is devoted to giving each other space and time to grow is most likely to last. Both parties get to change and discover more about themselves as well as the world around them, knowing that they would never reject each other and that both are willing to accept any changes that might occur in the other. Unconditional acceptance, loving guidance, and a mutual sense of freedom – these are the characteristics of a devoted and lasting friendship.

ENGLONE Expectations

Back in high school, I was one of the students who were relatively well-versed in the English language. In fact, I was the school paper’s literary editor during my senior year. I have to admit, however, that speaking English has always been a bit difficult for me. Somehow, writing has always been a penchant and a talent of mine, yet whenever I open my mouth, my vocabulary suddenly becomes blank. I daresay I am very critical when I listen to other people talking in English, though. I tend to look for faults in the grammatical structure or vocabulary choices of some speakers; however, when it is my turn to speak, I turn out to be not so fluent myself. In terms of vocabulary, I know a fair number of English words, and am very comfortable with using context clues to determine the meanings of some unfamiliar words.

I’ve read fairly many books, most of which are novels, and I daresay I can comprehend them without much difficulty. I, however, am not into classics and have trouble appreciating such literary works as To Kill a Mockingbird or “A Rose for Emily”. I also have a bit of difficulty when trying to fathom the meanings of odes or sonnets; however, after further reflection, I am able to grasp what the writer is trying to get across to the readers. Educational textbooks, on the other hand, don’t pose too much of a problem for me, and I usually am able to understand them after the first reading. Despite all the little difficulties, I enjoy reading all kinds of English texts very much, not only for the entertainment it offers, but also for the way it hones my vocabulary and improves my writing skills. All in all, I believe I am fairly knowledgeable and comfortable with the proper usage of the English language, and that with a bit of help, I can read and comprehend English texts very easily.

Having enrolled in the ENGLONE course, I expect a lot of readings, as well as writing exercises such as this. I also expect classic texts and a few book reports, as well as lists of sesquipedalian words that are seldom used by contemporary authors but are still very interesting and are in existence. I also expect a brief overview of how the English language was formed, including interesting etymologies of certain words and phrases. Of course, I am also expecting tips on how to come up with well-written book reviews, formal essays, and movie reports, as well as how to be more critical when reading and evaluating English literature.

Because one of my biggest dreams in life is to write at least one bestselling book in my lifetime, I truly believe that this course will be crucial in achieving that dream. I need all the practice I can get in order to better master my hold on the language, and I need an instructor to motivate me. Maybe, just maybe, a few years from now, a book by Mary Ann Ngo will sweep Dan Brown’s newest sequel to the Da Vinci Code or Paulo Coelho’s most recent release off the bestseller stands.

Throughout the duration of my ENGLONE course, I daresay I did not have much difficulty writing and speaking in English. My proficiency in English has, I’d like to believe, steadily improved, as well as my ability to read and comprehend English texts critically. I have also overcome the problem regarding the writers’ block, and can come up with starting ideas much faster and easier than before. I even found the short essays rather enjoyable to write, as they made me come up with original ideas and showed others as well as myself how well or how badly I can use the English language. Coming up with the major essays, on the other hand, proved to be a bit more challenging yet still enjoyable, pushing me to create and build up my own ideas and successfully express them in writing. Now, I don’t have as much difficulty finishing a piece of writing, whether high-stakes or low-stakes, within a reasonably short amount of time.

The reading assignments and discussions were beneficial in helping us students to improve, too. I now know how to pinpoint the major details in a given text, as well as how to properly summarize it. Understanding the text as a whole proved to be easier as well, as I can now evaluate a manuscript on the levels of knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. The only problem I encountered, and mayhap have not totally overcome, is that of paraphrasing another person’s written work and getting rid of deadwood. Other than that, however, I have relatively few problems reading and comprehending English texts critically.

Most of the general expectations I had of the course were met satisfactorily, although some of the more specific ones were not. For instance, I did not learn how to write book reviews, formal correspondences, and other such documents. I also was not able to learn a lot of vocabulary words. I did, however, receive many helpful tips and hints on how to go about gathering ideas, asking the right questions, putting my thoughts on paper, and finally revising my own work. I also believe that ENGLONE has successfully honed my writing abilities – through the essays and writing exercises – and developed my listening skills – through the classroom discussions. In fact, near the end of the term, I even won two awards – Best Prose and Best Overall Writing – in the DLSU Writing Challenge for a short story I submitted. All in all, then, I am happy with what the course had given to and produced from me, as well as with the way it improved my proficiency in the English language.

On improving the course, I would suggest that students be taught how to write book reviews, editorials, news articles, and the like, because the students might need the extra knowledge when writing book reports and/or movie reviews for their other courses. Furthermore, I would like to suggest that ENGLONE professors come up with short vocabulary lists that would undoubtedly improve the students’ vocabulary and expand the pool of English words that are known to them.

I had much trouble choosing between my two major essays, simply because both were decidedly written with the passion and zeal that can be brought about only by a genuine interest in the topic and a distinct point to get across. Students’ “Write” To Speak was written in honor of Miss Meryll Yan and with the purpose of reminding the DLSU student body and the OSAc itself of the importance of free speech. It talks about how students’ right to expression should be protected, how it contributes to the betterment of the entire academic community, and how it is worded in and backed by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and our own Philippine Constitution. Grandfather’s Bamboo Rod, on the other hand, was written by a Chinese adolescent with the purpose of reaching out to her fellow Chinese friends. It does so by acknowledging their complaints about how the Chinese culture affected and continues to affect their upbringing and by proposing a different approach to parenting that succeeding generations can adopt. It expounds on both approaches by providing examples, pointing out certain differences between the two, and finally illustrating how each affects the children through each of the stages in their life course.

After much thought and deliberation, however, I finally decided on Grandfather’s Bamboo Rod mainly because other people took part in it by sharing their own stories and sentiments. It may not be as persuasive or decidedly argumentative as the first, but by backing up its points with the accounts of friends and a bit of psychological research, I believe that it effectively encourages change in the present system of Chinese parenting. Moreover, it carries with it more than a desire to get a high grade, for it is a joint narration by many voices seeking change. In fact, the essay is especially for those people who shed heartrending tears, shared painful experiences, and poured out their sentiments to me. It is also for those people whose stories haven’t been told but who can particularly relate to the theme of the essay. Finally, I chose my second major essay because, aside from the justification essay, it is the last piece of writing I wrote as part of the requirements of the course and thus serves most suitable for gauging how much I’ve gained from this course.

Their strong ties with tradition cause them to place a huge significance on the old adage “Spare the rod and spoil the child.” This saying implies that a child, being very subservient, should be guided rigidly. Consequently, many parents believe that the best and surest way to discourage a child from going against certain values is by taking castigatory action in the form of spanking, paddling, or slapping. Often in line with these forms of punishment are name calling and cursing, which would ideally make the child realize his or her mistake. Moreover, in a highly authoritarian setting, a child’s autonomy is often highly limited. Any form of backtalk or even crying when the child is being reproached is typically prohibited and may merit yet another beating or a more severe punishment. Consequently, the child is discouraged to think for him/herself and to take action in the pursuit of his or her own wants. Often, many Chinese parents fail to appreciate/recognize this ability of children to think and decide for themselves because tradition places an emphasis on the values of obedience, conformity, and discipline. In fact, there used to be a universal belief/saying that goes “A child is seen, not heard,” implying that parents alone know how to distinguish between right and wrong or good and bad. Furthermore, traditional parenting – whether right or wrong – has the natural tendency to perpetuate itself by implicitly encouraging a person to raise his or her children the way he or she was raised.

Granted that authoritarian parenting has some important contributions to a child’s well-being, it also has many disadvantages, specifically on the part of the children. One of them is that the values encouraged and ultimately instilled by authoritarian parents are counterproductive in today’s society. It can hardly be argued that these values and traits were, for a long time, largely beneficial and highly productive; however, most countries are progressing from a structural and bureaucratic workforce to a more flexible organization where individual creativity and critical thinking matter more than discipline and blind conformity. Another probable consequence of an extremely restrictive upbringing is for the child to fail to establish a sense of security and trust in the world in which he or she lives. As such, he or she is very likely to lose initiative with his lack of autonomy and face the world with the constant nag of shame and self-doubt. Psychological research even shows that authoritarian parenting is linked with poor communication skills, passivity, and inferiority because the individual never developed the courage to speak his or her thoughts. Moreover, as the child enters his or her adolescent years and starts looking for meaning and a sense of existence, the continual nagging and restriction by his/her parents may cause him or her to lose his or her identity and instead largely borrow from those of his or her parents. He or she is also deprived of a healthy social life because of the overly strict rules imposed by his or her parents. With the lack of visible signs of parental love, then, he or she may feel unloved and thus lack the ability and/or readiness to love later on. Lastly, name calling and criticisms irrefutably go a long way by gradually changing and downgrading a person’s self-concept or self-worth. This, in turn, typically sows pessimism, dissatisfaction, and rebellion, and shows in the individual’s lack of self-confidence, attention-seeking drives, and tendency to compare self with others.

Laptops, which reach high internal operating temperatures, can heat up the scrotum which could affect the quality and quantity of men's sperm.

"The increase in scrotal temperature is significant enough to cause changes in sperm parameters," said Dr Yefim Sheynkin, an associate professor of urology at the State University of New York at Stony Brook.

"It is very difficult to predict how long the computer can be used safely," he told Reuters. "It may not be at all, if the testicular temperature goes up high within a very short period of time."

Adolescents and young men who use laptops several times a day over many years face the greatest risk. Sheynkin fears that if laptop use is not curtailed, in 15-20 years when they want to start a family the men could face problems.

"Long-term use may have a detrimental effect on their reproductive health," he said.

Sheynkin and his team studied the impact of using a laptop on 29 healthy volunteers between the age of 21-35 by measuring scrotal temperature before and after they used a computer on their lap.

The research is reported in the journal Human Reproduction.

Even without turning the laptop on, the scrotal temperature rose by 2.1 degrees Centigrade when the young men sat with their thighs together to balance the computer on their lap.

When they switched it on the temperature rose -- by 2.8 degrees C on the right side and 2.6 degrees C on the left.

"It shows that scrotal hyperthermia is produced by both special body posture and the local heating effect of laptop computers," Sheynkin said.

A serious case of laptop burn was reported in a letter published in a medical journal two years ago after a 50-year-old man burned his penis while using a laptop balanced on his legs for an hour, despite wearing trousers and underpants.

The researchers used two different brands of computers in the study.

"All laptop computers generate significant heat due to the increasing power requirements of computer chips. New laptops with higher power requirements may produce even more heat," Sheynkin added.

whew, the two days suspension of classes was a big help to us CCS students...(^_^) hehe, mga machine projects kc eh...:-) anywayz, today was kinda gr8. PEDANCE was relatively okay, our introso report didn't turn out too bad, and the formdev finals were, wel, more difficult than i had expected but relatively manageable...:-) hehe, buti na lang essay. :-) the culminating activity was gud, too. we got some good quiet time to think and meditate about things amidst our hectic schedules, and the facis gave some really heartwarming speeches. :-) the machine project deadline and case study deadline were also moved. :-) unfortunately, the requirements also increased. hehe, there's the recreational project for introds. :-) oh well, i do hope its not too hard. at least there aren't any more problem sets. :-)

‘Meningo’ contained now, DOH insists

The dreaded disease meningococcemia, which affected Baguio, Metro Manila and nearby provinces, has been contained.

“We can say it’s pretty much contained now. The bacteria is endemic but not easily contagious,” said Health Secretary Manuel Dayrit Tuesday.

Dayrit said there is no new case of the disease in Baguio or in San Lazaro Hospital (SLH), where patients have been brought for the last three days.

Dayrit added all government hospitals are equipped with isolation rooms where cases of meningococcemia are treated.

There were 15 cases of meningococcemia in Baguio from October to November this year and four from Metro Manila, Antipolo City and Quezon province. Those in Baguio were treated at the Baguio General Hospital and those in the other places, at the SLH.

It was earlier reported that SLH had six cases including three deaths, but Dr. Arturo Cabanban, hospital officer-in-charge, said two of them were not meningococcemia cases but “another type of blood disease” and that they had been transferred to another hospital.

Meningococcemia is caused by the bacteria Neisseria meningitidis that resides in the throat and nose through droplet infection and eventually affects the blood, damaging the brainwall and causing death in a matter of 24 hours.

Dayrit said patients develop a sudden surge of high fever, respiratory problems, rashes, and vomiting, among other symptoms. Dayrit said the disease does not occur in the country often but recorded cases were 30 in 2002, 39 in 2003, and 32 in 2004. Deaths from the disease can reach as high as 30 percent.

the compro2 depex was depressing!!! waaaaaa.......... :-) hehe! it was really difficult and long... i esp hate 1b and 2b... :-) 1b is the one where u hav 2 luk for the errors, and 2b was the programming problem involving only likned lists... oh wel, im just glad the answers weren't discussed...:-) at least i dont have 2 be 2 depressed. now all i can do is wait for the results...:-) hehe!

speaking of compro2, my depex 1 hasnt been returned to me yet... i had a complaint about one of the programs, c... one point was deducted because i failed to add the "else" part in the delete medicine prob... unfortunately i do not knw the prof hu wrote the prob - trogo - personally, so i havent really talked to him/her yet. hehe! oh wel... :-)

Title: Students’ “Write” to Speak

Thesis: Campus editors, acting as the voice of the students, should be given the independence and freedom to write about any college issue.

First Draft:

In the September 24 issue of The Lasallian, Meryll Yan, editor-in-chief (EIC) of the said publication, wrote an editorial entitled “The Eff-Word.” The article reflected her opposition against the bureaucracy being practiced by OSAc, as well as the extent of power the office has over the approval/disapproval of student activities. Her article was well-accepted by the students, and before long, it had begun circulating in the form of email messages as well. OSAc apparently didn’t like being the butt of criticisms and eventually decided to send Miss Yan a letter forcing her to retract what she had written. As any self-respecting writer would have done, Miss Yan refused and stressed her points. Both letters were also circulated via email and chat rooms, and more and more students began talking about OSAc’s disorganization and ineptitude. A month after the editorial was published, word came out that a disciplinary case had been filed against Miss Yan, accusing her of committing “acts that put the name of the university into disrepute.”

On October 27, 2004, Pahayagang Plaridel, another DLSU student publication, issued a front-page article stating OSAc’s points. OSAc wrongly pointed out that Miss Yan, being a writer and thus uninvolved in the planning and filing and student activities, lacked both the personal experience and the necessary grounds for her allegations. They argued that since Miss Yan failed to get OSAc’s side regarding her opinions, her editorial came out too biased and unfair.

Injustices such as the one Miss Yan faced should not happen again. Her experiences should be enough to wake us up and unite us towards one goal – that of protecting our rights and stressing the rights and roles of campus editors in the university. All in all, the right of college editors to free speech should be reiterated here in DLSU in order to prevent the overstepping of these rights by abusive school authorities.

formdev: wow... ive nvr drawn so many cartoon characters in one day!!! :-) or have i? hehe, grabe, the kids were hyperactive as in!!! :-) i had barely filled in the hair details of this character when a couple more kids come running over asking for copies, too! :-) haha, i felt lyk singing... "I have two hands... the left and the right... " hehe! bt i hav to admit it was fun...:-) and 1 kid wrote a letter to God, thanking Him for this and that... he/she even wrote allen's, maus' [mickey's], and my name on that letter... now isn't that sweet?? :-) so adorable and heartwarming, isnt it? :-) with all the problems and work we have on our hands ryt now, what we had expected to b a total bother turned out to be quite relieving... ar least for me...:-) made me forget my problems for a while...:-) den agen, if u hav a stack of blank sheets of paper in front of u waiting to be filled for eager boys and girls, hw can u think of school? :-) these kids need something to color, and quick!!! :-)

relax: fnally, relaxation. :-) being with close friend/s really beats a lot of things...:-)

There have been many psychology books, self-help books, and even fairy tales that discuss friendship and try to determine its "rules." I believe, however, that all of these so-called rules point to one basic characteristic of humans - the desire to "own." In the same way that animals are caged, classified, and characterized by personnel in the zoo, many people feel the innate need to permanently keep someone special, the desire to classify friends based on mutual self-disclosure, and the tendency to claim how well they know their friends. Animals kept in cages, are, however, known to act quite differently froim those that are allowed to run free. This inconsistency/dissimilarity is due to the fact that caged animals are not able to grow, evolve, and interact with others of their kind. Even though they are well-cared for by the people manning the zoo, they have little respect for these people because deep inside, they feel resentment. They have little love for their providers simply because they want their freedom. If they could read those nasty placards hanging in front of their cages, I'm sure they would be even more infuriated. The classifications and descriptions written on these placards give the animals a characterization they would carry for the rest of their lives or until they break free of the chains holding them to their cages and barring their way to freedom. In the same way, a person who claims and boasts to other people that he/she knows his/her friend inside out, that he/she can predict how his/her friend will act in any situation, and that he/she can write an entire profile on that person, is really barring his/her friend from changing, from being himself/herself to others, and from "evolving" into someone else. In the same way that animals that are free to experience the world and face all its challenges become the fittest of its kind to survive,a friendship that is devoted to giving each other space and time to grow is most likely to last. Both parties get to change and discover more about themselves as well as the world around them, knowing that they would never reject each other and that both are willing to accept any changes that might occur in the other. Unconditional acceptance and a mutual sense of freedon - these are the characteristics of a loving and lasting friendship.

BERLIN (Reuters) - German police detained a naked 25-year-old woman and her 23-year-old partner who were engaged in sexual intercourse on the pavement in the middle of a busy shopping district, police said Saturday.

Police in the western town of Duelmen said the couple were spotted by pedestrians late Friday morning having intercourse. Pedestrians in the town of 40,000 called police, but the couple initially ignored police orders to stop.

"The naked couple continued their passion-filled activity on the cold asphalt," a police spokesman said. "They finally followed police instructions to stop on the third warning."

The spokesman said the two face a 100-euro ($125) fine each for disturbing the peace.

LOS ALAMOS, N.M. - Authorities have evicted a man from a cave on Los Alamos National Laboratory land where they say he apparently lived for years with the comforts of home — a wood-burning stove, solar panels connected to car batteries for electricity and a satellite radio.

Los Alamos Deputy Fire Chief Doug Tucker said Roy Michael Moore's hideaway, which also was equipped with a bed and a glass front door, was discovered earlier Oct. 13 after a Department of Energy (news - web sites) employee working at the Los Alamos site office noticed smoke wafting from the cave in a heavily wooded, steep canyon.

The employee reported the smoke to the fire department. Tucker said the smoke came from Moore's wood-burning stove.

Ten marijuana plants were found outside the cave. Moore, 56, has been charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to court documents. He pleaded not guilty and was released on bond.

An officer called to the site by firefighters pulled up the plants and confiscated about 21 ounces of dried marijuana, according to a statement of probable cause filed in magistrate court in Los Alamos.

Tucker said that as fire crews and lab security force members approached the cave after its discovery, they saw Moore and discovered "numerous" marijuana plants growing around the cave.

"From the campsite that I saw, he had been there quite a long time. ... I was really impressed with his ability to set up a camp," Tucker said.

He said it was impossible to see the cave or any sign of Moore from the edge of the 75- to 100-foot cliff above, which is inaccessible because of a tall fence.

The lab has not used the restricted area where the cave is located for years, said Bernie Pleau, a spokesman for the department and the National Nuclear Security Administration in Los Alamos. It is about 50 yards out his office door and down the cliff, he said.

"I don't know if anyone has tried squatting on DOE property before or not," Pleau said. "Pretty strange, don't you think?"

The site was not near any high-security or critical areas, he said.

"It wasn't a security threat by any means," Pleau said.

The DOE ordered the lab to remove all of Moore's property from the area Oct. 16, Pleau said.

hehe been feeling sick since i woke up. i actuali feel a bit better now, albeit still lethargic and unenthusiastic... oh, and what a day!!! i was so embarrassed in the LA session earlier!!! wwaaa.... :-)

hehe, you see, nathz called to tell me that the venue of the picture taking had been moved to gox. unfortunately the LA session had started by then. because of the noise in gox, i had to raise my voice in order to be heard. at that time, ppol in the LA started quieting down to vote on a motion. my voice rang out in the room!!!! haha, kakahiya tlaga. everyone started laughing and staring at me. hehe, in the end i juz stood up, gave a quick explanation, and ran out of the room to gox! :-) haha, kakahiya! but oh well, on the bright side, i did get to gox in time for the pic taking...:-) have to write a letter explaining my tardiness though. hehe!

we have also started on the major essays for englone. we came up wiht a list of subjects and topics earlier, and then i believe we're going to narrow the list down tomorrow or the day after. :-)

In terms of family roles, it used to be legal for women to be beaten by their husbands as long as the stick used is not thicker than the thumb - hence the idiomatic expression "rule of thumb." In contrast, women of today have roles not only in the family, but also in the workplace, that are being increasingly recognized. They are no longer limited to housework and child rearing, but may work in offices, or even in jobs alongside those of their husbands. Whereas women before were kept in the house and were not even granted education, women today are free to pursue any career they want. The patriarchal society of before is drawing nearer and nearer to a close, especially with the passage of laws such as the women's right to suffrage and the inclusion of women in the field of sports. All in all, women today have more freedom, although they are still viewed by some men as mere sexual objects who are trying hard to enter a change a society of male domination. (Macionis, 2003)

anywayz, we got bart to sing and play the guitar earlier, haha. it was sooo cool! he was great and the songs were really funny, too. hehe, kakatuwa.

hmm... cant really think of much else to say... :-)

first off, i just want to apologize to my groupmates for being "fashionably late" for the smile therapy meeting earlier. :-) hehe, promize, i didn't do that on purpose!!! :-) how was i to know that there will be a rally? hehe! but sorry talaga, guyz... hehe

anywayz, the intra-C programming competition earlier was sooo demoralizing for me. hehe! grabe... i only got one problem correct... waaa.... hehe! oh well, at least now i have the initiative to actually study for the ACM. :-)

hmm.... all the schoolwork is piling up once more, huhuhu... hehe! someone please tell me the sociology papers are not yet due next week.... i haven't started on any of them!!! :-( waaaa..... hehe! oh well... que sera sera... :-)
